Tomato Grades and Sizes

Tomato Produce comes in different shapes and sizes. We combine tomato of uniform characteristics into their grade and size. The following document outlines those characteristics.

Grades

Grading ensures that the physical characteristics of the tomato categorised into three classifications.

Premium

• They are mature green to tannish yellow ( 70% green to 30% yellow) colour. They also have glossy shine as coating.
• They have the longest shelf life.
• They are uniform in shape and size.
• They don’t have any physical, mechanical & pest and disease spots.

Grade Equivalent˳

Standard

• They are pink to light red (30% Pink to 70% Light red colour)colour. They have a partial glossy shine as coating.
• They have longer shelf life but less than premium grade.
• They are mostly uniform in shape and size.
• They may have spots due to slight skin defects, physical handling, pest and diseases (1sq.cm of surface area). These defects don’t affect the flesh of tomato.

Grade Equivalent

No Grade

• They are of mixed colour ranging between mature green to dark red. They have a rougher skin compared to other two grades.
• They have the shortest shelf life. Suitable for immediate consumption.
• They are not of uniform shape and size.
• They may have spots due to skin defects, physical handling, pest and diseases (2sq.cm in surface area). These don’t affect the flesh of the tomatoes.

Sizes

Tomatoes are grouped on the size of their diameter. The following sizes are arranged from largest to smallest.

Large

• Each Tomato is greater than 60mm (0 > 60mm).

Size Equivalent

Medium

• Each Tomato is greater than 45mm and lesser than 60mm (45mm < O <60mm).

Size Equivalent

Small

• Each Tomato is greater than 35mm and lesser than 45mm (35mm < O < 45mm).
